Dear Paul,
I wanted to convey a special Thank You for your beautiful work done on the 24" Starmaster mirror. I have been enjoying it thoroughly, and am extremely pleased with the huge difference it makes when observing and imaging. The quality of your work is all that your reputation implied, and I want you to know that you not only have my heart-felt thanks, but that you will be receiving my constant and well-deserved praise to the rest of the astro community.
Clear Skies!

Hi Paul, how is business these days? Busy I bet.
Well you wanted me to write to you regarding my mirror and weather or not I can tell a difference, well here is the report:
Some previous notions to friends:
“I finally took my 16-inch telescope out to observe this past Saturday. I was “wowed” at what I saw. Since I had my primary recoated and the new 3.1” secondary installed (I took the 2.6” out, it was too small for the scope and to think I have been using this 2.6 for several years now) the new 3.1 is highly reflective (98-99%), aluminized with an eight layer dielectric coating on top. I got this mirror from Pegasus Optics and it is awesome. Anyway I have never gotten the kind of performance out of my scope since I have owned it. The new optics gave me incredible views! I saw for the first time with my scope the “E & F” stars in the trapezium and many embedded tiny pinpointed stars within the gas of M42 with amazing clarity. You could drive a bus between the tiny e & f stars of M42, that is the resolution I had at 150x. That new secondary has a great wavefront, says John of Pegasus, better that 10th wave and I am very happy with it. He told me the 2.6 inch mirror was too small and that my scope was operating like a 14 ½ inch. YKES! And I have been using it this way for years. Now all I want to do is observe, I should have another chance this weekend. Can you tell I am excited?”
I was out again this weekend with my scope and compared views with a 20-inch, I was surprised to see very little difference in the galaxies and nebulae that was seen. I have wanted a 20-inch for some time but now I think I will stay with the 16-inch, there was not enough “Wow” factor there for me to save up $6500.00 to drop on a 20-inch. The difference was very subtle and I have great eyesight. Your coatings have made a big difference in the performance of my telescope! I also compared the view with another 16-inch, the faintest galaxies were looking at were brighter in my scope and the contrast was also better. I feel as if the 16-inch is working like a 17.5-inch and that may explain why the 20-inch was not that much more impressive. Do you have any opinions about my comments, do they seem far fetched? Anyway, I love the scope now more than ever…..thanks again Paul.

James Roberts - 20" MaxR coating
Hi Paul,
Just wanted to let you know that my 20" mirror arrived in perfect condition. I have not had an opportunity to try it out yet, but the mirror looks absolutely beautiful! From what I can tell so far you did a superb job! I wasn't expecting such a visibly obvious difference, but that Max-R coating appears exceptionally brilliant - and the mirror edge looks perfect! Thanks for your good efforts! I'll let you know how the observing goes.
All the best,
Jim
BTW for those interested, I just got my mirror back from a recoating at Spectrum Coatings. Paul Zacharias did a beautiful job. Out of the crate the Max-R coating looked exceptionally brilliant compared to the mirror when I sent it off, and so far the observing performance has been spectacular! My only real test thus far has been at 7,000 feet on top of Kitt Peak - image contrast and crispness were absolutely beautiful - each person who had a chance to compare had no doubt that my 20" Obsession significantly out-performed Kitt Peak's 20" RC in visual quality and impact.

Paul,
I just thought I'd let you know what the results are on the recoating you did on my Celestron 11. Two weeks ago, NEFAS had its annual Star Party. I was absolutely amazed at the pinpoint stars, never seen before; and it took me 20 minutes to collimate; previously, it took 5, because the images didn't warrant more time. Last night, NEFAS had a public viewing session and Mike Ramirez (our President-for-Life) looked through the reborn C11 - his reaction in a word: "Wow!" Dr. Mike Reynolds (astronomy professor, world traveler, and a veteran premium optics user) also was quite impressed with the C11's views now. The short version is that while Celestron obviously does a decent job figuring the glass, its coating regiment isn't that good. There's a
significant increase in my scope's performance solely due to the Spectrum Coatings.
Best regards,
R.
